How it works

Your host pours each rum, tells you where it's from and what to look for, and leaves you to it until you want the next one.

The evening

How it goes.

Three guests on the sofa in the tasting corner — low tables, candles, a coupe cocktail, the curtains drawn behind

01 — Settle in

Ring the bell at Impact Brixton

The bar is through the coworking space. Your host finds you a sofa, the snacks come out, and when everyone's there they start with what rum is and where it comes from.

02 — Seven rums

One at a time, in order

  • BarbadosWhere rum began. Clean and dry.
  • MartiniqueMade from cane juice, not molasses. Grassy.
  • JamaicaBig, fruity, funky.
  • GuyanaDemerara. Dark and heavy.
  • BrixtonOurs, off the still behind the bar.

Your host picks the seven. Take your time with each one; the next comes when you're ready.

03 — After

The bar is right there

When the last glass is done you're already in the bar, and the cocktails are made on the rum you just tasted. Most people stay.

Questions

FAQ

Do I need to know anything about rum?

+

No. Most people who come don't. Your host starts from what rum is and where it comes from, and the six glasses do the rest. If you already know rum, the house rum and the Martinique will still give you something to argue about.

How much do I actually drink?

+

Seven tasting measures over an hour and a half, with snacks. Enough to feel it, not enough to lose the evening. The bar is there afterwards if you want more.

Can I book it for a group?

+

Yes. Book your seats together online. For a private tasting for a team or a celebration, or as part of hiring the bar, email hello@brixtonculture.com and we'll set it up around you.

Is it a private room?

+

No. You get a corner of the bar, sofas and low tables, with the bar open around you. That's the point. When the tasting ends you're already in the bar.

What if I don't drink?

+

Come anyway, there's a glass for you. Tell us when you book and your host will pour a Caribbean botanical alternative alongside each rum.
